Encyclopedia > Delta Prize for Global Understanding

Presented annually by Delta Air Lines and the University of Georgia, the Delta Prize for Global Understanding recognizes individuals or groups whose initiatives have helped promote world peace as well as globally significant efforts that provide opportunities for greater understanding among nations and cultures. Such efforts can include grassroots projects that diminish hostilities in a particular part of the world, international programs that promote communication or trade among different peoples, and/or leadership that inspires global cooperation and peace.


The prize includes a $10,000 cash grant and an original work of art (seen at right) designed by Barbara Mann and Gary Noffke of the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art [1] (http://www.visart.uga.edu).


Laureates include:

  • 2002 - Sadako Ogata, former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
  • 2003 - No Prize Awarded

Delta awards the annual Delta Prize for Global Understanding in conjunction with the University of Georgia.
Delta was one of the airlines targeted in the failed Operation Bojinka plot: the conspirators planned to bomb a Delta MD-11 flying from Seoul to Bangkok via Taipei on January 21, 1995.
Delta also announced that it plans on keeping the Spirit of Delta which was the first 767-200 bought by the airline's employees.

In terms of total operating revenues, Delta is the fourth-largest airline in the world (behind Air_France-KLM, American Airlines, and United_Airlines) As of March 1, 2005, Delta and its subsidiaries served 219 destinations in 46 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as 53 international destinations in 35 countries.
Delta has a marketing alliance with both Continental_Airlines and Northwest_Airlines and is a founding member of, and the largest carrier in, the SkyTeam international alliance.
On 13_May 2005, onboard a Delta Air Lines McDonnell_Douglas_MD-88, shortly after take-off from Denver on a flight to Atlanta, a loud bang was heard and the cabin simultaneously lost pressurisation and the undercarriage could not be retracted.
