The district was established in 1994 by merging the former districts of Demmin, Altentreptow and Malchin.
Geography
The Peene river enters the district in the west, runs through a large lake called the Kummerower See (33 km²), and leaves the district to the northeast. The district of Demmin unites parts of the historical regions of Mecklenburg and (Western) Pomerania.

It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Müritz, Güstrow, Nordvorpommern, Ostvorpommern and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and by the city of Neubrandenburg.
