Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania (LDDP, in Lithuanian Lietuvos Demokratine Darbo Partija), a social democratic political party in Lithuania, that emerged out of the Lithuanian section of the CPSU. LDDP was led by Algirdas Brazauskas, the first president of independent Lithuania. LDDP later merged to form the Lietuvos Socialdemokratu Partija (Social Democratic Party of Lithuania). The youth organization of LDDP was called Lietuvos Leboristu Jaunimo Unija (Lithuanian Labour Youth Union).
The case of Lithuania was not unique: in the experience of world liberation movements, the primary organisation also fulfils the function of a matrix organisation, and gives birth to political fracturing.
The Social DemocraticParty was the first to effect its restoration, on the 12th of August 1989 as if this role were its due: it was the first political party in Lithuania's history, established back in 1896.
These are basically the principal parties which play a decisive role in the shaping of the current political landscape (with the exception of the Independence Party, which has vanished).
The party was not represented in the parliament 1999 and 2003.
The LabourParty's introduction of all-female shortlists for 50% of vacant and winnable seats (1992) was overturned by an Industrial Tribunal in January 1996, which ruled in favor of rejected male candidates that the policy was against the "Sex Discrimination Act" of 1975.
