The Democratic Party East Timor or Democratic Party In Timor-Leste is a political party of East Timor, established on June 10, 2001. Currently, most of the members of the party are young generation who have been studying abroad and those who have completed their study in Indonesia, Norway, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. There are some "driven forces" which to establish this political party. Firstly, the young generation realize that there will be no democratic change taking place soon if the country falls into the leadership of the old generation, who have been continuously maintaining past political revange. The political revange will not guarantee internal peace and reconciliation in the short term. Secondly, the need for balancing power both in the government and in parliament through having the young generation's contribution, in all decision making process. Thirdly, there is great concern about gender disparities and environmental issues which need great attention. Fourthly, the need to recognize the effort made by all activists who had contributed to the Timorese struggle during the period of occupation. Lastly, the need to fight against corruption, collusion and nepotism in government bureaucracy.


The political party has 8 seats in parliament. The party is ranked number two in parliament after FRETILIN (left wing party).
