History

The party was founded in 1990 by Gramoz Pashko, Azem Hajdari, Sali Berisha etc. becoming the first opposition party after they were legalised. Gramoz Pashko (February 11, 1955 – July 16, 2006) was an Albanian economist. ... The party came to power in 1992 after winning the 1992 parliamentary election under the leadership of Sali Berisha and Aleksander Meksi and ruled until 1997. The government resigned in 1997 after a civil war nearly broke out and it's socialist rivals gained power. It is part of the Union for Victory (Bashkimi për Fitoren) coalition, which received 37.1 percent of the vote in the 2001 elections and 46 members of parliament. In the July 2005 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Party won 56 of the 140 seats and its allies won 18. Also, two other parties joined the new coalition (PAA & PBDNJ, 4 and 2 seats). This means that with a combined total of 79 seats, the Democratic Party and its allies were able to form the government with Sali Berisha becoming Prime Minister. Albania responded to the wave of democratization that swept across Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s by cautiously easing restrictions on religion and foreign travel, legalizing opposition political parties, and broadening contacts with the West; diplomatic relations with the United States were resumed in March 1991 after a 51-year break.
Albania was approved as a member of the World Trade Organization in July 2000 after five years of negotiation, and in the local elections that autumn, the Socialist Party of Albania (PSS) won most seats, ending the domination of local councils by the opposition Democratic Party.
Albania’s political goal is to sign an association accord with the EU; however, in early 2004 the EU insisted that further progress with economic and political reform was required to move the process further forward.
