The Democratic Socialist Perspective (DSP), is a Marxist political tendency within a broad Australian socialist grouping, the Socialist Alliance. The DSP can trace its organisational origins back to 1965 and the period from 1965 to the founding of the Socialist Workers League in 1972 is best understood as its prehistory. Subsequent to the formation of the SWL the history of the tendency can be conveniantly divided into an early period when they were known as the SWL, a middle period after they had renamed themselves as the Socialist Workers Party and then, following their break from Trotskyism, the period in which they were known as the Democratic Socialist Party. This last period ending in 2004 when they became known as Democractic Socialist perspective.
