Mumbai is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in India with over 50% of its population of non-Maharashtrian ethnicity. There are many large ethnic groups represented such as Gujaratis (in Ghatkopar, Vile Parle, Juhu, Khar, Mulund, Borivali, Kandivali and many in South Bombay) South Indians (Tamils and Malayalis in Chembur, Marol etc.), Parsis & Sindhis in South-Bombay (south of Dadar), and large communities from UP, Bihar and Punjab scattered around. A large number of people who work as vegetable vendors and shoe-polishers (and other small tradesmen) are migrant labourers from UP and Bihar. Because of a perceived sidelining of Marathi in this large mixture of peoples and cultures, some Maharashtrians (including the elite) emphasize that Marathi should be given due importance, Mumbai being a part of Maharashtra. Gujarat (àªà«àªàª°àª¾àª¤ in Gujarati) is the most industrialized state in India after Maharashtra and is located in western India, bordered by Pakistan to the northwest and Rajasthan to the north. ...

Of late many news media groups claim that 60% of Mumbai's population of 16 million live in slums. This has led to speculation of over 9 million people living in slums in Mumbai. Several reputed NGOs also claim that slums cover only 5-8% of Mumbai's land area. However there is no census data available to support either of these claims. The confusion probably arises from mixing up the MMRDA population (16 million/4355 sq kms) with the Greater Mumbai population (11.9 million/468 sq km). About 48.88% of the population of Greater Mumbai live in slums.
