He was 24 years old, and a lieutenant in the 11th Bengal Native Infantry, Indian Army during the Indian rebellion of 1857 when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 2 October 1857 at Chota Behar, India, Lieutenant Daunt, with a sergeant (Denis Dynon) acted with conspicuous gallantry in the capture of two guns, particularly the second which they rushed and took, pistolling the gunners who were mowing down the detachment, one third of which was hors de combat at the time.
On 2 November the lieutenant chased mutineers across a plain into a richly cultivated area.
