She was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 2006 federal election as a candidate of the New Democratic Party (NDP). A school teacher by profession, Savoie was a Victoria, British Columbia city councillor and has also served as a director of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition, where she pushed to make the city more suitable for cyclists.
