Denistone East's only retail area is 'Midway', a small strip of retail premises including a combined newsagent & post office, fruit shop, supermarket grocer, butcher shop, chemist, video store, barber, betting shop (TAB), Italian restaurant, bakery and petrol station that cater for the local community. Denistone East features an unusual roundabout at the intersection of Lovell, Quarry, North Roads and Cecil Street (Midway) that resembles a figure 8. At present the suburb is served exclusively by Sydney Buses (STA) services. Route 286 and peak hour routes 297 and X18 operate from the Midway shops to the Sydney CBD and routes, while routes 542 and 544 pass through the Midway shops travelling between Auburn and the city, and 518 and X18 between Macquarie University and the city. In the early years St Anne's Church was also used as a school but "wear and tear and filth and dirt" inflicted on the church by the "Parish boys" led to the building of a separate school in 1838.
The cemetery next to the Church contains the graves of several people who were well known in New South Wales at the time.
These include Emma Oxley wife of John Oxley the explorer, Lady Eleanor Parkes, second wife of Sir Henry Parkes and to the left, Maria Anne Smith who created the Granny Smith apple.
