Brookes, a Yorkshireman, joined Northamptonshire in 1934 and in a very weak team, which failed to win a game for four years from May 1935, he quickly became a regular. His batting really developed, though, after the Second World War and for the next 10 years he was at or near the top of the national batting averages. He was unlucky to play in no more than one test match: the one was on the 1947-48 tour of the West Indies, and his tour was ended when he chipped a bone immediately after the first Test. As senior professional, Brookes frequently stood in for Freddie Brown as Northamptonshire captain in the early 1950s, and when Brown retired in 1953, Brookes took over, the first professional captain of the county. He retired in 1959 and was later county coach and a local magistrate.
