Dennison Township is a township located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 908.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 90.2 km˛ (34.8 mi˛). 89.8 km˛ (34.7 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 908 people, 375 households, and 255 families residing in the township. The population density is 10.1/km˛ (26.2/mi˛). There are 492 housing units at an average density of 5.5/km˛ (14.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 99.01% White, 0.22% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 375 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the township the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 105.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $41,875, and the median income for a family is $51,563. Males have a median income of $36,667 versus $24,145 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,373. 5.7% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
James S. Dennison was born in 1801, in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., and there received his early training in farm work, obtaining an education, which, though of the usual primitive log-cabin type, afforded a basis for the general information and practical knowledge of his riper years.
Dennison resided a short time after his marriage on the farm now owned by his son E. He afterward began the hotel business in Claysville, thence moving to Uniontown, Fayette Co., Penn., where he was engaged in business until his tragic death in 1851.
Dennison returned to Donegal township, Washington county, and located on the "Old Stevenson" tract, lying one mile west of Claysville, which was part of a vast amount of land once owned by Hon.
The former was a farmer and a native of England; the latter a native of Pennsylvania and of German descent.
JOSEPH HEALEA, Mayor and Justice of the Peace, Dennison, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, December 5, 1821, and is a son of Edward and Sarah (Busby) Healea, natives respectively of Pennsylvania and Maryland.
JOHN W., salesman, Dennison, was born in Cadiz, Harrison Co., Ohio, November 9, 1857, and is a son of Eli and Mary (Penn) Hill, the former a native of Ohio, the latter of England, of English and Irish descent.
