The Military of the United States is deployed in many countries across the world. This is due to many factors: the Cold War, in which the US government in the aftermath of World War II thought it needed troops around the globe to counter the threat of the Soviet Union; and more recently, the US has deployed troops to locations considered strategic in the War on Terror. The US has nearly 1.4 million active personnel, and over 325,000 of those are deployed outside the United States and its territories.
