In March 2000, five years before his move to Deportivo, by then 18-year old Coloccini signed at Italian giants AC Milan in a transfer that was cloaked in controversy.
Deportivo lacked money and president Lendoiro wanted to build on the success of the previous season (final four in Europe) and to save some money.
Deportivo didn't score a single goal in the Champions League, suffered a shocking Copa exit at little Elche and were mid-table when the transfermarket reopened in the winter months
Deportivo Coruna kept their faint Spanish title hopes alive on Friday as they recovered from a goal down and the early sending-off of Noureddine Naybet to beat UEFA Cup finalists Alaves 2-1 in a game of three penalties.
Alaves, who face Liverpool in their first European final on Wednesday, were gifted the lead on 15 minutes as Moroccan defender Naybet was sent off for what appeared to be an arm to the face of Javi Moreno, who scored from the resulting spot-kick.
Alaves had asked for the match to be brought forward a day to allow more time to prepare for Wednesday's UEFA Cup final against England's Liverpool in Dortmund and the Basque side certainly looked distracted for the remainder of the game.
