The Deputy Secretary of State of the United States is the chief assistant to the Secretary of State who is responsible for Foreign Affairs. The position was created in 1972 The current Deputy Secretary of State is Richard Armitage, under Colin Powell. However, please note: President George W. Bush announced 7 January 2005 that he is nominating U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick to be the deputy to Dr. Condoleezza Rice when she takes office as Secretary of State after confirmation hearings end.
