Vice Premier

When Ariel Sharon brought the Israeli Labour Party into his coalition government in January of 2005, the Knesset created the position of Vice Premier (Hebrew: משנה לראש הממשלה - Prime Minister and Premier in Israel refer to the same title), allowing the two parties to smoothly form a new coalition for the 30th Government. Shimon Peres, a former Prime Minister who had also previously held the position of Vice Prime Minister in Likud-Labor coalitions in the late 1980s, was appointed Vice Premier at that time. Peres departed the Cabinet along with the rest of the Labor MK's in November 2005. Deputy Prime Minister

In the 30th Government of Israel, the post of Deputy Prime Minister (Hebrew: סגן ראש הממשלה) was held by Justice Minister Tommy Lapid, then by Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.
