Derby Acres is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 376.


Geography

Derby Acres is located at 35°14'51" North, 119°35'49" West (35.247512, -119.596825)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.5 km˛ (3.7 mi˛). 9.5 km˛ (3.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 376 people, 125 households, and 101 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 39.7/km˛ (102.8/mi˛). There are 145 housing units at an average density of 15.3/km˛ (39.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.09% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.53% Pacific Islander, 4.52% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 7.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 125 households out of which 36.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.4% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% are non-families. 12.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.24.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $44,688, and the median income for a family is $50,179. Males have a median income of $45,521 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $19,925. 14.6% of the population and 15.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 20.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Downstream, the Derby Diversion Dam diverts the water into and the Truckee Canal and carries it to the Carson River.
The project can provide service to approximately 6,200 acres of fertile bench lands adjacent to the Truckee Canal west and south of Hazen, and another 66,700 acres on the north and south sides of the Carson River near Fallon.
Cereal crops are raised on another 9,950 acres, with a small amount of acreage devoted to corn, melons, squash and berries.
