As a 400 metres and 4 x 400 metres runner he won gold medals at European, Commonwealth and World Championships. His career highlights include a fifth place over 400 m at the 1987 World Championships and a 1991 World Championships 4x400 m gold medal. His career was often interrupted by injury, most notably when he broke down during the Barcelona Olympics with a hamstring injury and with the help of his father hobbled the last 250 metres to complete perhaps his slowest ever 400 m race. 400 m is a common track running event. ...
