He is mentioned by Fredegar as the prince of the West Slavic tribe of Sorbs (White Serbs). He is the first ruler of northwest Slavs mentioned by name. The Chronicle of Fredegar (died ca 660) is the main source for Western European events of the 7th century, a formative period whose scarcity of sources in part justifies the characterization of its silence as that of the Dark Ages. Fredegar says that he has been subordinate to the Franks for a long time. After the defeat of King Dagobert I by Samo near Wogastisburg, Dervan and his Serbs joined Samo in 631/632, with whom he led his people into several wars against the Franks. Further reports of Fredegar imply that Dervan and his people lived to the east of the Saxon Saale. The reference to Dervan in 631/32 is also the first written confirmation of the presence of Slavs to the north of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge / Krušné hory).
