Derwyn Shea (born 1937 in Hamilton, Ontario) is a clergyman and former politician in Ontario, Canada. Shea was educated at the Universities of Toronto,Western,Laurentian and Chicago, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree(magna cum laude), a Master of Arts degree in urban history and structure, a Dip.Th and Th.B and a Doctor of Theology.His pastoral Clinical studies were taken at McMaster. He is an ordained Anglican priest, and worked in the dioceses of Saskatchewan, Algoma and Toronto before entering politics.He founded the Eastview Neighbourhood Association for 'latch-key' youth in Toronto's east end. He was the first Canadian to receive a Fellowship from the Academy of Parish Clergy, and was involved in Ugandan relief efforts.In 1999 Shea was inducted as rector of St Hilda's parish in Toronto and Chairman and CEO of St Hilda's Towers.In 2002 he was installed as a canon in the diocese of Toronto. Shea was a member of the city of Toronto's Planning Board from 1972 to 1982including 4 years as chairman, when he was elected in his first attempt as senior alderman in Toronto's ward 1.He was a member of the Mayor's Committee on Community and Race Relations and a member of the Toronto Hydro Commission. From 1988 to 1994, he represented Toronto-High Park on the Metro Toronto city council and served on the executive committee, as a budget chief, as the founding chairman of Metro Council's Action Committee to combat Racism.He was a member of the Toronto Police Commission and chairman of the Metro Works Committee. In 1992, he served as North American Vice-President of the World Association of Major Metropolises and was instumental in the establishment and chairing of a commission to study social development and culture in urban environments focusing particular attention on child labour and child abuse. In the 1995 provincial election, Shea defeated New Democratic Party a cabinet minister and incumbent Elaine Ziemba by about 1,500 votes. He served as a backbench member of Mike Harris's government for the next four years, serving with distinction as parliamentary assistant responsible for urban affairs and then as parliamentary assistant for citizenship and culture. Shea was also appointed to chair the all-party parliamentary committee to investigate Ontario's nuclear power status.He served as Ontario's representative on the Board of Directors of the Canada Ukraine Legislative Cooperation Project. He retired from political activities in 1999, and returned to his position as rector of St. Hilda's Anglican Church. In 2000 Shea convinced an all party committee of the Ontario parliament to support the creation of the Ontario Association of Former Parliamentarians and subsequently was elected founding chairman. In that capacity he forged links with the Canadian Association, the Quebec Association, the US Association of Former Members of Congress and the Association of Former Members of the European Parliament and other provincial and international associations.


In other community activity Shea has served on the Ontario Liquor Advisory Committee, Ontario Select Land Disposition and Marketing Panel, Parkdale Golden Age Foundation(honourary director), City of York Task Force on Business and Employment,Swansea Area Ratepayers Association, founder of the Lion's Club Chapter in St Louis Saskatchewan and an AA Chapter in MacDowall Saskatchewan. He is a member of the Albany Club in Toronto, the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Variety Club and Phi Delta Kappa. He is the recipient of the Canada 125 and the Queen's Jubilee Medals.He serves as padre to Branch 75 of the Royal Canadian Legion and served as chaplain to the RCAF radar base in Falconbridge Ontario while posted to St Alban's in Capreol.
