Des Arc is a city located in Prairie County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,933.


Geography

Des Arc is located at 34°58'32" North, 91°30'2" West (34.975426, -91.500671)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 5.3 km˛ (2.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.49% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,933 people, 783 households, and 534 families residing in the city. The population density is 365.9/km˛ (948.0/mi˛). There are 850 housing units at an average density of 160.9/km˛ (416.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 83.03% White, 14.80% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 783 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,750, and the median income for a family is $28,264. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,629. 20.0% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.2% of those under the age of 18 and 12.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The source of the White River is in the Boston Mountains of northwest Arkansas near Fayetteville.
The river flows northwards from its source in northwest Arkansas, loops up through southwest Missouri near Branson and then travels back into Arkansas and on generally southeast to its mouth at the Mississippi River.
Many residents of Arkansas believe that deepening the navigation channel will adversely affect the wildlife which is a major source of tourism in the area.
