Desert Shores is a census-designated place located in Imperial County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 792.


Geography

Desert Shores is located at 33°24'11" North, 116°2'27" West (33.403148, -116.040706)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 792 people, 279 households, and 181 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 463.3/km² (1,208.4/mi²). There are 406 housing units at an average density of 237.5/km² (619.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 73.48% White, 1.39% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 21.09% from other races, and 2.90% from two or more races. 60.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 279 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.60.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 128.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 125.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $24,712, and the median income for a family is $29,550. Males have a median income of $26,176 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $8,352. 7.9% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

California's natural ecosystems -- communities of plants and animals interacting in a physical environment -- span 10 different biological categories, ranging from the cool, wet redwood forests of the North Coast to the hot, dry Mojave and Colorado deserts of the southeast.
Although many California ecosystems are adapted for quick recovery from extreme events, increases in the frequency of such events could push some systems beyond their potential to recover.
