The Design Council is a British organisation incorporated by Royal Charter and registered as an independent charity, but effectively a government agency (or, in the jargon of the UK government, a "non-departmental public body").
It "enhances prosperity and well-being in the UK by demonstrating and promoting the vital role of design in a modern economy", and targets business, education and public-sector bodies. It receives around £7 million (c. Euro11m, or US$12m) of public funds each year.
The Design Council was formed in 1944 as the "Council of Industrial Design" by Hugh Dalton, the President of the Board of Trade in a British Government still in the throes of the Second World War. Its objective was 'to promote by all practicable means the improvement of design in the products of British industry'. Today, it provides "online knowledge and other design resources" and "a series of projects that see designers and other experts working directly with selected businesses, schools and public services organisations to integrate design thinking and methods thoroughly into their strategies and systems".
