That, after all, is the premise and the allure of the "Final Destination" films, in which a handful of people lucky enough to escape a disaster are hunted down by the unseen hand of an implacable predator -- death, fate, karma, whatever -- and meet their fates in gruesome, violent and insanely complicated ways.
It's the slasher film reconfigured as a Rube Goldberg construction, and part of the fun is watching director James Wong and his co-writer, Glen Morgan -- who sat out the first sequel, but return for this new installment -- lead us through each new setting with obvious glee.
The second film had a more diverse selection of victims-to-be, and let them spend a little time discussing what was happening to them, and why; it gave the film a little zing of smarts and soul.
