Background Deva Raya II (1426-1446 AD, note that Nuniz states differently in that his reign was for 25 years, not 20) was a monarch of the Vijayanagara Empire who succeeded his father , Veera Vijaya Bukka Raya (or simply Vijaya Raya) after Vijaya Raya's short uneventful two year reign ended. Unlike his father, Deva Raya II was an effective and successful monarch. During his reign, Deva Raya II prevailed over his conquest of Kondavidu, repelled the invasions of Ahmad Shah I of the Bahamis and the Gajapati Kapilesvara, restored the Reddi Kingdom of Rajamahendri to its former postition, fought against the Sultan Ala-Ud-Din (centered around the forts of Mudgal and Raichur in the Krishna - Tungabhadra), and continued onwards to Kerala where he would defeat the ruler of Quilon as well as other chieftains. Abdul Razzak (the Persian ambassador who visited southern India during the time) wrote that overallDeva Raya II has extended the Vijayanagara Empire from Orissa to Malbar and Ceylon to Gulbara as well as taking over multiple ports of south India. Even so, the issue with the Bahmani kingdoms had not yet been resolved and the two kingdoms continued to be hostile to each other throughout Deva Raya II's reign (fortunetly the Bahamani invasions were unsuccessful and eventually drove the Bahamani monarch Ahmad Shah I to move his capital to Bidar during his invasion of the empire. It should also be noted that under Deva Raya II's rule, fine art flourished, temples were constructed throughout the capitol, revenue was extranted through tributes from Ceylon (under the command of the naval leader Lakkanna, men of letters in Sanskrit and vernaculars were promoted, and overall the kingdom entered an era of prosperity both economically and culturally that would be marked as the golden age of the Sangama Dynasty (Deva Raya II himself was declared a great builder as well as a patron of the poets). His successor Mallikarjuna Raya (1446-1465), unforunetly, was a weak ruler who lost most of the Vijayanagara Empire's land to the Gajapatis (who conquered Rajamahendri, Udayagiri and Chandragiri), the Portugese (who started to conquer most of the ports of South India), as well as the Bahamani kingdoms who's territory grew ever closer to the capital.
