Devers is a city located in Liberty County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 416.


Geography

Devers is located at 30°1'35" North, 94°35'30" West (30.026379, -94.591642)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.8 km˛ (1.9 mi˛). 4.8 km˛ (1.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 416 people, 141 households, and 111 families residing in the city. The population density is 85.9/km˛ (222.3/mi˛). There are 165 housing units at an average density of 34.1/km˛ (88.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 69.47% White, 14.90% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 13.94% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 20.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 141 households out of which 36.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.8% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% are non-families. 16.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $30,278, and the median income for a family is $31,042. Males have a median income of $30,625 versus $15,208 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,962. 22.6% of the population and 23.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Devers is at the junction of U.S. Highway 90 and State Highway 61, thirty-two miles west of Beaumont in southeastern Liberty County.
By the 1870s the town had become a station on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, and in 1880 it reported a population of 100.
The population, estimated at 210 as late as the mid-1970s, had grown to 507 by the mid-1980s.
