The term "devil's weed" originated from the Spanish Inquisition in which they used the term to denounce tobacco. One of Christopher Columbus's sailors, Rodrigo de Jerez (or Xerez), was credited to be the first old world inhabitant to discover tobacco. He brought the habit of smoking it like the Native Americans back to Spain where it was met with interest and fury alike.
