It, along with the slightly smaller city of Burnie, are the major regional centres of the north-west of the state. The area was first surveyed by Captain Charles Hardwicke in 1823. The area was originally known as Port Frederick, then Mersey River, the name of the river flowing through the town. Historic Buildings Sherwood Hall an 1850’s pioneering home. Home Hill, c.1916, was the home of former Premier of Tasmania (1923-1928), Joseph Lyons, now owned by the City of Devonport. The contents inside are owned by the National Trust. Mersey Bluff Lighthouse, Bluff Road, c.1889, an impressive 13 metre high structure. Listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List. Uniting Church, Hamilton Street, Latrobe, Victorian Free Gothic style church, which replaced an earlier timber structure. Listed on the Register of the National Estate. Malunnah, an historic mansion in Devonport established between the years 1887 to 1916, now restored to its former glory.
