The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment (usually known as the Devon and Dorset Regiment or just the Devon and Dorsets) is an infantry regiment of the British Army. Following the many amalgamations that have occurred, the D & D is now the senior county regiment (none of the regiments above it in the order of precedence have counties as part of their name). In the 2004 re-organisation of the infantry, it was announced that the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment would cease to exist; it will be amalgamated with the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment to form a new battalion of The Light Infantry. On 24th November 2005, the MOD further announced changes to the amalgamations. The regiment will become part of a new large regiment created by the alamgamation of The Light Infantry and the Royal Green Jackets. This new regiment is to be called The Rifles and will be formed by the end of 2007. Until 1951 it was formally called The Dorsetshire Regiment, although usually known as "the Dorsets".
