Deyda Hydara (June 9, 1946-December 17, 2004) was the co-founder and leading editor of one of Gambia's leading newspapers, The Point. He was also a leading correspondent of the AFP News Agency. Mr. Hydara was an advocate of press freedom and a fierce critic of the government of President Yahya Jammeh, who had been openly hostile to Gambian journalists and the media. The Point! is a fable by American songwriter and musician Harry Nilsson about a boy named Oblio, the only round-headed person in the Land of Point, where by law everyone and everything had to have a point. ... Mr. Hydara was shot dead on December 17, 2004 in his vehicle by unidentified gunmen. To this day, his murder remains unsolved.
