Location DUET is situated in Gazipur some 40KM north from Dhaka city. It besides the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory(BMTF). Also nearer to Bangladesh Ordnace Factory(BOF). Some 5 public universities are situeted in Gazipur.
Campus DUET covers an area about 20 acres. It has a compact campus with library, auditorium, halls of residence and residential buildings for teachers and employees within walking distance of the academic building. Post Office is also located in the same building. A new multistoried academic building is in underconstruction.

The university was created out of Engineering College, Dhaka, which was established in 1980. Through a Government Ordinance in 1986 the college was converted into an institution (BIT, Dhaka). The honorable President of Bangladesh was the visitor of the institute. A Board of Governors headed by a Chairman appointed by the President is the policy making and administrative authority.
