Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve fought throughout his life for the upliftment of women. He started a college for them and established the first Indian University for women, named SNDT Women's University in Mumbai. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1958. He was from the Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra, India.
