A crossing loop was added to the station in the early 1990s to enable more than one train to be past Eltham station at any one time. For several years, the down train would arrive into the platform, then shunt to the crossing loop to allow an up train to pass. At some stage in the mid-late 90's a platform was built on the loop. However, the crossing loop and the additional platform is normally only used from 3 to 6 times a day. Recently, Diamond Creek station has unofficially became a host station as Connex staff (usually only one person) are present at the station during the peak times to operate the safeworking equipment. A crossing loop is a place on a single line railway where trains in opposing directions can cross each other. ...
