The athlete DianeModahl was unfairly treated and robbed of a chance of winning a gold medal when she was banned from athletics by the sports governing body for allegedly being involved in a drugs scandal, the court of appeal heard yesterday.
Modahl, 35, was also robbed of the best years of her sporting life, the three judges were told at the start of her appeal against a high court ruling last year that she was not entitled to £1m compensation for the way she was treated by the British Athletics Federation (BAF).
Modahl, who was the 1990Commonwealth Games 800m champion, is claiming £480,000 spent on legal fees and medical advice plus a similar figure in damages over the way her case was handled by the BAF.
Manchester Born and resident DianeModahl is the three times 800 metres Commonwealth Games medal winner and Gold Medallist of the 1990 championships in Aukland, New Zealand, where she broke the existing 800 metres world record.
Diane maintains that the turning point of her sporting career came early when she was just eleven years of age, in her first year at secondary school, when a talent-spotter from Sale Harriers Running Club saw her during a school physical education class and afterwards invited her to join the club.
Diane vehemently denied the charge and spent the following two years in a state of what she described as "a living hell", appealing against the charge - she was eventually totally vindicated and cleared of the charge by the British Athletic Federation and her professional status was reinstated.
