Schoemperlen, Diane (507 words)
Diane Schoemperlen, short-story writer, novelist, teacher, editor (b at Thunder Bay, Ont 9 July 1954).
In the Language of Love (1994), Schoemperlen's first novel, uses the 100 stimulus words of the standard psychological Word Association Test to tell the story of Joanna, a collage artist, from her childhood through her relationships with men to her marriage and motherhood.
Schoemperlen is also an editor of note, having edited a collection of women's writing, Vital Signs: New Women Writers in Canada, published in 1987, and another collection, entitled Coming Attractions '96.
Pieces of a Life - New York Times (969 words)
Schoemperlen, who has made a name for herself already with four collections of short fiction, follows her heroine, Joanna, from childhood in the late 1950's and 1960's through early adulthood, her affairs with two impossible men (Henry and Lewis) and her marriage to the even-tempered Gordon, with whom she has a small son named Samuel.
Schoemperlen certainly makes us feel the heavy presence of the past: the way memories of one's parents, for example, shift as one ages, and their ghosts become multiple and seem to demand continuing discourse.
Schoemperlen into moments that seem contrived, as in "Mutton," which begins, "Rhymes with 'button.' Button, button, who's got the button?" This is followed by a meditation on Esther's habit of saving buttons in an old biscuit tin.
