Encyclopedia > Dick Annegarn

Dick Annegarn (born in The Hague, May 6, 1952) is a Dutch singer-songwriter who sings mostly in French, although on occasion Dutch and English. He spent his youth in Brussels, and after having learned to play guitar he went to Paris, where he recorded his first album in 1973, which was very successful; although nearly never happened, as his money had run out and he was ready to return home before finding a producer for his songs just as he was about to leave. This was the subject of his most well known song "Bruxelles". He quit the music business in 1978 at the height of his fame citing its corrupt nature and then worked on social projects[citation needed] in Paris before slowly returning to music, working often with avant garde and occidental musicians, before releasing a string of albums in the late nineties up to 'Plouc' (2005), where he played with musicians from the south of France, accompanying his unique voice and guitar with often sparse and unusual arrangements played on brass instruments.

Proclaimed by many as the "son of Jacques Brel"[citation needed]; he is one of the most well respected current day troubadours of the chanson, plus a charismatic and irreverent performer. He does not like the musical trade and prefers an underground lifestyle. Brel on a cover of Les Adieux à lOlympia concert album (1966) Jacques Brel (April 8, 1929 – October 9, 1978) was a respected Belgian French-speaking singer-songwriter, considered by many as a poet as well, given the power of his lyrics. ... Because he is not French but a Dutchman educated in Brussels and Paris, he has a unique French singing voice, very guttural and well articulated. His lyrics are sublime "poetry of the earth"{fact} and he has a playful yet caustic sense of humour with emotive, stark and imaginative arrangements like Townes Van Zandt or John Martyn. His "outsider" status as a gay man was also the subject of his 'Un' Ombre' album. RFI Musique - - DICK ANNEGARN (1877 words)
Dick Annegarn chose the press conference for the release of this record to administer a slap to the face of the French music business: he announced he was quitting music because of the conformity and hypocrisy which reigned in a milieu in which he had always felt estranged.
Annegarn's concerts at the Cirque d'Hiver featured on the singer's new live album, "Dick Annegarn au Cirque d'Hiver", which was released a few months later.
Annegarn's intention was to make an album of this traditional music and bring it to the attention of a wider audience, but unfortunately he failed to find a distributor.
Francevision (198 words)
Dick Annegarn may not be a familiar name to most people, but this gravelly-voiced Dutchman has been making music ever since the early 1970s.
In 1972, at the age of 20, the young artist was invited by the legendary singer Mireille to attend her "Petit Conservatiore" in Paris, at that time the ultimate spot for la chanson française (Françoise Hardy was one of her earlier pupils).
Annegarn forged his signature sound early on, marrying the best qualities of the chanson with the irreverence and fearlessness of such avant-garde musicians as Frank Zappa.
