Dickens is a city located in Dickens County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 332. It is the county seat of Dickens County6.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 332 people, 133 households, and 88 families residing in the city. The population density is 130.8/km² (340.1/mi²). There are 163 housing units at an average density of 64.2/km² (167.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.58% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.52% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 9.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 133 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $19,875, and the median income for a family is $31,750. Males have a median income of $22,361 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,024. 20.6% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 21.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Dickens County (B-11), in Northwest Texas, is bordered on the north by Motley County, on the west by Crosby County, on the south by Kent County, and on the east by King County; its center point is 33°38' north latitude and 100°45' west longitude fifty miles east of Lubbock.
Dickens was subsequently chosen as the county seat, and by 1893 the town had a courthouse, a hotel, two stores, and a wagonyard.
Several of Dickens County's windmills became well known to county residents, including the Poison, where a nester had apparently tried to poison a cowboy; the John's (1889), said to be the county's first; and the Courthouse Windmills, which dominated the courthouse square from 1890 to 1935.
