Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was famous for being and intelligent player and for his "folha seca" ("falling leaf") free kicks, where the ball will swerve seemingly downwards at the right time resulting in a goal. From midfield, he masterminded Brazil's two World Cup successes, and scored 31 goals in 85 international matches. He played for Brazilian clubs Fluminense and Botafogo, winning several titles with the latter. After the 1958 World Cup he was signed by Real Madrid of Spain, but he only played there briefly as he clashed with the team leader, Alfredo Di Stefano. Then he returned to Botafogo and ended his career playing for São Paulo in 1966. Didi also coached Botafogo, Fluminense, a Peru team in the 1970 World Cup that included stars like Teófilo Cubillas and Héctor Chumpitaz, in 1971 he managed the top Argentine club, River Plate when he accepted a lucrative position, and ended up his coaching career in Fenerbahce, team that won the Turkish Süper Ligi twice in a row from 1973-1974 and 1974-1975. Charlton was born in October, 1937, into a football family in the Northumberland mining village of Ashington.
His mother Cissie was a Milburn, his grandfather and four of his uncles were professional footballers and one of those uncles was the legendary "Wor" Jackie Milburn, Newcastle United and England centre forward.
They had played some breathtaking football that season, but inexplicably they missed out on honours, their FA Cup run also ending in the semi-finals and finishing fourth in the League.
