The quintet's name is thought to derive from the Cowper-Temple clause, a provision introduced by William Cowper-Temple, 1st Baron Mount Temple into the second reading of the Education Bill of 1870, which provided that no catechism nor denominational teaching of any kind should be included in the religious instruction given in rate-aided schools.
In September 2005, bassist Didz Hammond left the band to join ex-Libertine Carl BarĂ¢t in the band Dirty Pretty Things.
