Encyclopedia > Die xue shuang xiong

The Killer (喋血雙雄; pinyin: Díe xùe shūang xíong) is a Hong Kong thriller released in 1989 and directed by John Woo. It is considered to be one of the mainstays of the Asian "heroic bloodshed" genre of action cinema.

The Killer is a very popular and well regarded film. A Hollywood remake has been long since in development but various factors have kept it in development hell.

The film revolves around the character of Jeffrey (Chow Yun-Fat), a professional killer who, during one hit, accidentally blinds a young nightclub singer (Sally Yeh). Now driven to help the now near-blinded woman by securing money for a sight-saving corneal transplant, this attracts the attention of a cop (Danny Lee) who is impressed at the honor this killer displays, and soon delves further into Jeffrey's life to see what makes him tick.

In this respect, Woo's characters were modern-day knights who used guns instead of swords.
The most famous of these movies would be The Killer (Die xue shuang xiong) (1989), which brought Woo international recognition.
One year later he made another masterpiece, Bullet in the Head, that he still considers as his most personal work.
