Different Stages is a live album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1998 (see 1998 in music). The album was recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1978, during the 1994 Counterparts tour and the 1997 Test for Echo tour. The third disc is taken from a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon during the A Farewell to Kings tour; the bulk of the first and second discs were recorded at Chicago's New World Music Center. This is the only live album Rush released that contains "2112" in its entirety (All the World's a Stage omits the Discovery and Oracle sections, Rush in Rio contains only the Overture and Temples of Syrinx sections, and R30 Live in Frankfurt has the Overture, Temples of Syrinx and Grand Finale sections. Exit...Stage Left and A Show of Hands do not contain any section of "2112".), and the tour for this album was the only one that featured all of the "2112" suite as well.


The album is dedicated to the memory of Neil Peart's daughter Selena, who died in a car accident in 1997, and his wife Jacqueline, who died of cancer 10 months later. "Suddenly... You were gone... from all the lives you left your mark upon." In loving memory of Jackie and Selena. This text can be read from the inside of the album. The lyrics featured are from the song "Afterimage" a song from their 1984 album Grace Under Pressure.


The Japanese edition of Different Stages contains Force Ten as a bonus track, features lyrics for all the songs on the CD and a contains a miniature replica tour booklet from the A Farewell to Kings tour. There has also been discussion about whether the Japanese edition has superior sound quality. Some say it is slightly better, but many others say the sound quality is the same as on other editions [citation needed].
