Encyclopedia > Digital Devil Saga

Digital Devil Saga is a Shin Megami Tensei game released in the US on April 5, 2005, (in the US) by Atlus.

The game is set in a world of never-ending rain called the Junkyard. The entire world is seperated into six 'tribes', each one being ruled by one person. Everyone in the Junkyard knows that their purpose is to destroy the leaders of the other tribes, the dominating tribe assimilating the members following the leader who is killed. When only one tribe remains, the path from the purgatory of Junkyard to Nirvana will be revealed.

The game revolves around the tribe called Embryon, lead by the main character Serph, and his followers Argilla, Heat, Ciello, and Gale.

The story starts at a war with a neighboring tribe, the Vanguard's, over a mysterious object that fell from the sky. In the opening scenes, the mysterious object opens like a pod and everyone is peirced by an omnious light, leaving them with a weird marking somewhere on their body.

The player soon learns that this weird marking is deemed 'Atma', and grants everyone in the Junkyard the ability to turn into monstrous demons, but it comes at a price. The 'Atma' feeds off of a demon's lifeforce, and the only way to keep alive is to devour other demons, hence the game's motto: Rend, slaughter, devour.

The game continues with Serph's tribe trying to overcome the other tribes.

This game was a popular one back in the SNES days, but only in Japan.
