Encyclopedia > Digital mockup

Digital MockUp or DMU is a technology that allows product design engineers to replace physical prototypes with virtual ones, using 3D computer graphics techniques. It is also frequently referred to as Digital Prototyping or Virtual Prototyping. DMU allows engineers to design and configure complex products and validate their designs all without ever needing to build a physical model. A Design engineer is an engineer whose job is to produce a detailed design from a conceptual design, thereby bringing the real from the abstract on a day-to-day basis. ... Prototypes or prototypical instances combine the most representative attributes of a category. ... A 3D rendering with raytracing and ambient occlusion using Blender and Yafray 3D computer graphics are works of graphic art that were created with the aid of digital computers and specialized 3D software. ... Design, usually considered in the context of the applied arts, engineering, architecture, and other such creative endeavours, is used as both a noun and a verb. ... The structure of a product is a breakdown of the product in several items and parts, together with a relationship between them. ... Engineering validation test, or EVT is the first in a sequence of new-product development stages, typically followed by: DVT, Design validation test PVT, Production validation test Volume ramp Mass production These stages are employed as project management methods in companies developing electronics products. ...

One of the techniques that makes this possible is the use of light-weight 3D models with multiple levels of detail that allow engineers to visualize, analyze, and interact with large amounts of product data in real-time on standard desktop computers. In 3D computer graphics, polygonal modeling is an approach for modeling objects by representing or approximating their surfaces using polygons. ... In programming, level of detail involves decreasing the detail of a model or object as it moves away from the viewer. ... A Design engineer is an engineer whose job is to produce a detailed design from a conceptual design, thereby bringing the real from the abstract on a day-to-day basis. ... Product Visualization involves visualization software technology for the viewing and manipulation of 3D models, technical drawing and other related documentation of manufactured components and large assemblies of products. ... Desktop computer with several common peripherals (Monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, microphone and a printer) A desktop computer is a personal computer made for use on a desk in an office or home and is distinguished from portable computers such as laptops or PDAs and specialized computers such as servers. ...

Goals

  • Reduce time-to-market by identifying potential issues earlier in the design process
  • Reduce product development costs by minimzing the number of phyisical prototypes that need to be built
  • Increase product quality by allowing a greater number of design alternatives to be investigated
