Dillinger and his gang had recently robbed the First National Bank of East Chicago and with law enforcement on their tracks, decided to relocate to Tucson, population 30,000.
Unfortunately for Dillinger, a fire broke out on the dawn of Jan. 22 at the Hotel Congress, where the gang stayed and sparked a chain of events leading to the Tucson capture of the legendary bank robber and his gang Jan. 25, 1934.
Dillinger made it a habit to read the daily news, but on this day he strayed from his usual routine, which would have alerted him to the capture of his gang.
