In musical notation, diminuendo indicates that the notes are gradually getting softer (quieter).


The opposite of diminuendo is crescendo.

In addition to diminuendo and decrescendo, there are several more specific terms for effects of the same type: morendo (literally "dying"), smorzando ("extinguishing"), and a niente ("fading away to nothing").
