Throughout his career as manager he demonstrated excellence in both tactics and team psychology. Penev's most notable quality was his ability to work well with young players. During his carreer at CSKA Sofia he discovered a lot of previously unknown or little-known talented youths and used them as a basis for a domestically and internationally successful squad. Several of them developed into European-class players.
Penev, nephew of the team's coach, was the team's centre forward.
Bulgaria's coach DimitarPenev was a laid back character who had good instincts when it came to team chemistry.
Penev incorporated many of his former club players (including his nephew Luboslav Penev) into Bulgaria's national team, a decision that he was widely criticized for.
