Dimitris Tsovolas is a politican in Greece.


Born in a village outside Arta, Epiros, Greece in 1941. Originally a member of PASOK, He served as the country's Finance Minister during the 1980s when he followed controversial policies. During the election campaign of May-June 1989, the then Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, widely expected to lose the elections as he did, said: "Tsovola, dos'ta ola" (give it all away) referring to high salary increases for civil servants in an attempt to remain in power. However, this ploy did not work. And Tsovolas was among those former PASOK ministers indicted over the summer of 1989 over fiscal irregularities related to the Koskotas and the Bank of Crete scandals, as well the famous corn scandal in which Yugoslav corn was allegedly imported into Greece and allegedly resold to western Europe as Greek. He was found guilty and received suspended jail sentence and was deprived of his political and civil rights for 5 years. At the end of the sentence 1995, he founded a separate party called DIKKI. DIKKI did well in the September 1996 elections for a new party and got around 4% of the vote and six seats by positioning itself as the left-wing, social-democratic alternative to the now New Labour-like PASOK. However, the party failed to capitalise on its success and was seen as out of date and out of touch by most voters in the election of 2000 and 2004.
