Ding Yuan (? - 189) was a rival warlord to Dong Zhou. Under Ding Yuan served the mighty Lü Bu and Zhang Liao. Ding Yuan accepted Lü Bu as his foster son. In 189 A.D., he was murdered by Lü Bu because of an offer to join Dong Zhou.
However, DingYuan was eventually killed by his trusted aide Lü Bu, who had been bought over by Dong Zhuo.
In Chapter 3, DingYuan was said to be regarded as a rival by Dong Zhuo as he opposed the latter's plan to depose the young emperor in favor of the Prince of Chenliu (who was later enthroned as Emperor Xian).
However, Dong Zhuo refrained from killing DingYuan on the spot as the mighty warrior Lü Bu, who in the novel was the foster son of DingYuan, was standing closely by.
Because of internal corruption, lack of funding and incompetence, by the time of the First Sino-Japanese War the Imperial Japanese Navy was able to outmaneuver the Beiyang Navy.
Dingyuan served as Admiral Ding Ruchang's flagship at the Battle of the Yalu River on September 17, 1894.
