Dinh Bo Linh's childhood

Dinh Bo Linh's father is Dinh Cong Tru, a local mandarin under Ngo Quyen (939-944) and Ngo Xuong Van's (950-954) reign. Dinh Cong Tru passed away early in his age while Bo Linh was still a little boy. His mother then took the child back to her village to live and raise the child. There Dinh Bo Linh in his past time will ride atop water buffaloes and plays games around with other kids in the village as a fake peasants-warlords rebellion with cotton leaves as flag. When he reach a mature, adult age he joins Tran Lam, one of the Thap Nhi Xu Quan, 12 lords rebelling each other, who made him general thanks to his skills and talents.


Rise to Emperor (965-980)

One by one, Dinh Bo Linh defeated or subdued the other 11 lords. His multitude victories over other lords earned him the Van Thang Vuong which means Millions of Victories King. After unifying the country in 968 and bringing peace back to the land, he proclaimed himself Dinh Tien Hoang De. First thing he renamed the country to Dai Co Viet. Believing the country is still weak, fragile where outside influence can be easily made, he strengthens the government with military gents. Among his top generals are Nguyen Bac, his oldest son Dinh Lien, Le Hoan etc... This latter will be a major figure for the Dinh dynasty succession and the rise of the Anterior Le Dynasty. Dinh Tien Hoang's succession (980)

The end of Dinh Tien Hoang's reign is marked by the following succession events.

  • First, Dinh Tien Hoang removed his oldest son Dinh Lien from the throne. He wants his next son Dinh Hang Lang to succeed. Another son, the infant Dinh Tue was next in line. Enraged by this change of testament, Dinh Lien ordered Dinh Hang Lang, the heir of the throne assasinated.
  • Second. One night in 980, as Dinh Tien Hoang and his son Dinh Lien were having a party, a mandarin official sneaked into the palace and killed both father and son. Thus fate has that not only Dinh Tien Hoang was assasinated but also the infant son Dinh Tue will inherit the kingdom.

Dinh Phe De (980) and the threat of the Song

When Dinh Tue becomes emperor, because of his age, his mom the Mom Queen Dowager assume the Regent role. While all of these events ocurred, in the north, China is enduring some dynastic changes. The Song finally overrun the South Han dynasty. They founded the Song dynasty (nha Tong) that will last till the end of the 13th century when they in turn were overrun by the Mongols Yuan led by Gengis Khan. The turmoil of succession of Dinh Tien Hoang in their southern border gave the Chinese Song a pretext to meddle, interfere into the matters of the vietnamese people, to invade the country and subjugate it again under China's rule. Le Hoan's rise to ascension (980)

Appalled by this new threat, the Mom Queen Dowager Duong Thai Hau throws her support to Le Hoan who is now commander in chief of the army, Thap Dao Tuong Quan. In a new twist and to confront the Song army who already arrived at the border, the Mom Queen Dowager agrees to recognize Le Hoan and let him step up to the throne as a new king. With Le Hoan, a new dynasty is founded, the Anterior Le Dynasty. As Le Hoan is crowned Emperor, the Song army is approaching the boundary of the 2 countries....
