However, main research is focused on excavations in the early tertiary "Eckfelder Maar" near Manderscheid/Eifel and the late tertiary "Dinotherium Sands" nearby Eppelsheim in Rheinhessen.
The excavations in "eckfeld maar" (dated Middle Eocene, radiometric age determination is 44.3 +/- 0.4 mioy) are organized since 1987 by the Landessammlung / Museum with the help of volunteers and europeen students.
The estimated age of these remains of a widespread fluvitile system in the region of Rheinhessen (W and SW of the town of Mainz) is Upper Miocene(Vallesium, 10-11 mio.
